Frequently Asked Questions about MLwiN
How do I compute interaction terms?

Let's use MLwiN data file gpa.ws for the illustration. Here is a snapshot of its variables names.

Let's say we are interested in both the main effects and their interaction of variable sex and highgpa. We don't have to manually create the interaction term. Instead, we can specify that the model will include these terms through Main effects and interactions from the Model menu.

Select variable sex in the Categorical section and highgpa in the Continuous section and click on Main Effects from the View window. Let's say we want to use female group as the reference group, we will leave the row corresponding to female unchecked and check the male row instead.

Now after clicking on Build, we can open up the Equation window. From the Equation window, we see that three variables have been added.
