DATA MANAGEMENT AND STATISTICAL ASSISTANCE NEEDED FOR UCLA DEAF GENETICS RESEARCH PROJECT

Looking for a motivated and reliable graduate student to provide data management and statistical assistance for an NIH-funded project on impact of genetic testing for deafness on deaf and hard of hearing adults and the Deaf community. Under supervision of Principal Investigator and Project Supervising Statistician, the individual will design and manage data collection and carry out statistical analyses especially for complex data sets, e.g., longitudinal data with missing values. Other tasks include consulting with project investigators on appropriate application of statistical methods and contributing to preparation of reports and grant applications. S/he is expected to have experience applying a wide variety of multivariate statistical methods to psychosocial and behavioral research data, managing large databases, assisting research teams on grant projects, and using SAS on Windows platform, as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Incumbent will develop program management reports, perform general data management tasks, and provide assistance to the data analysis team in support of ongoing research projects within the UCLA Genetics of Deafness research program. This is a part-time position (20% time), hourly rate commensurate with experience.

Job Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a master’s degree in biostatistics, statistics, or related discipline; at least one year of experience working in a research or clinical setting; be familiar with SAS and ACCESS; be able to communicate effectively with investigators and project staff; be able to monitor the transfer of data sets, both on-campus and nationally, across computer platforms and via Internet, using various media and file transfer processes; be able to design and implement data management procedures using SAS and ACCESS; and be able to perform appropriate statistical techniques to address research questions and hypotheses. While a master’s degree is preferred, students near the completion of their degree program also will be considered. - Maintain and demonstrate strong understanding of SAS software including imputation methods. - Demonstrate strong understanding of database tables, queries, and scripts in MS ACCESS. - Excellent verbal and written English communication skills. - Demonstrate aptitude for management of large research databases. - Ability to function both independently and as an effective member of a data-management team. - Ability to prioritize tasks and meet multiple project deadlines in a timely manner. - Specific experience managing large research databases is highly desirable.
