3D Modeling Lab:  Gaining Access

Access to the 3D Modeling Lab is gained through project proposals made by UCLA students, staff, researchers and faculty.  ATS reviews these proposals with our faculty advisors in the Experiential Technologies Center (ETC) for historic reconstructions and faculty advisors in the Institute for Digital Research and Education (IDRE) for scientific visualizations and computational simulation projects.

To Propose A Project Or Become a Registered Lab User

  • Read "About The Portal" and "3D Modeling Lab: A Summary" to familiarize yourself with the facilities and the resources.  See also "3D Modeling Lab:  Interactive 3D Modeling And Visualization" for descriptions of interactive real time modeling and visualization.
  • We highly recommend that you attend one of our Visualization Portal Informal Demos (available most Fridays 12-1 p.m., September - June, reservations are required). These demos will give you a sense of the kinds of projects that have been supported in the past.
  • You can send an email to portalatats.ucla.edu with a short description of your project and we will review it with an ETC or IDRE member.
  • Once we've reviewed the proposal, we will schedule a meeting with you to discuss the best way to approach your project.  Acceptance of projects is based largely on the available space and whether or not a project entails an appropriate use of Lab and Portal resources.  More complex projects may require multiple participants and grant funding. ATS can only provide computational infrastructure to work on the projects and high end facilities for presenting projects.
  • If your project is accepted we will setup accounts and access to the facilities.  An email will be sent to you confirming that your account is ready and including relevant information such as login and password.  Once your project is accepted and setup begins, it will take 24 hours or more before the account is ready for use.
  • We will schedule an orientation to the Lab and to the Portal.  During the orientation Lab staff will:
  1. Review the basic policies and procedures for the Lab.
  2. Explain the reservation system.
  3. Run through the process of entering the Lab using an access card.
  4. Ensure that you can log onto workstations, find applications and access your file system.
  5. Answer any questions you might have.
  6. Issue you an access card if you do not have one already.
