All of the workstations in the lab are identically equipped and configured and have identical application suits installed on them so that no matter what station you sit at you will have access to the same resources. The only exceptions to this are the few workstations that have scanners or printers attached to them, which have additional software for scanning and processing files and for printing.
Each workstation has 50GB of local disk space that can be accessed by lab users. This local space is wiped clean several times a year as it is intended as temporary space only. The remote file systems are where home directories and most of the data resides.
All registered lab users are issued work space on remote large- capacity file systems located in the ATS Data Center and accessed through gigabit network connections from anywhere on campus. These remote file systems are where users normally save and access all of their work and through which they can retrieve project data. They comprise a hierarchy of directories, including project directories, texture and image directories, map and site plan directories, archive directories and production directories. These file systems are fast, monitored, backed up regularly, and kept in good working order.
There are a variety of printers available to lab users including a Xerox Phaser 6250N color printer which prints up to 8.5 x 11, an Epson Stylus Photo R1800 color printer which prints up to 11 x 14, and an HP Laser Jet 8150PS which prints up to 8.5 x 11, B/W.
There are three scanners available in the Lab, including:
The lab supports a variety of laptops and projectors that can be used by registered lab users in remote locations for display, field work, GIS work and modeling. Contact lab staff at modeling-lab@ats.ucla.edu if you would like to use any of these systems.
Should you run into any problems using hardware or software, notice any computer behavior that might indicate a virus or worm, or have any trouble accessing either your files or the lab itself, be sure to report it immediately to lab staff, either in person or by e-mailing modeling-lab@ats.ucla.edu. Be as specific as you can in reporting the problem. We will respond as soon as is possible.
