Modeling Lab: Gaining Access

Access to the Modeling Lab is gained through project proposals made by UCLA students, staff, researchers, and faculty. ATS reviews the proposals in concert with our faculty advisors from the Experiential Technologies Center (ETC) for historic reconstructions, and from the Institute for Digital Research and Education (IDRE) for scientific visualizations, computational simulation projects and GIS projects.

To Become a Registered Lab User:

  • Read The Modeling Lab: A Summary to familiarize yourself with the facilities and the resources and ensure they are what you need for your project(s).
  • If you are interested in scientific visualizations or historic reconstructions we highly recommend that you visit one of our Visualization Portal Informal Demos (scheduled intermittently from September to June, reservations required). These demos will give you a sense of the computational, interactive real- time projects that the l ab has supported. If you are interested in historic reconstructions, visit the Experiential Technologies Center (ETC) website to get a sampling of the projects it has initiated and supported. For GIS, visit the Mapshare website.
  • Contact us.
  • Schedule a meeting and or review.
  • If your project is accepted you will fill out and submit a Modeling Lab account application form. Once your project is accepted and the account setup begins, it will take three working days before the account is ready for use. An e-mail will be sent to you confirming that your account is ready and including relevant information such as login and password.
  • Once your account is ready, schedule an orientation to the lab. During the orientation lab staff will:
    1. Review the basic lab policies and procedures.
    2. Ensure that you can log onto workstations, find applications, and access the file systems.
    3. Answer any questions that you might have.
    4. Arrange to have your lab access set up.
