Modeling, Scanning
And GIS Workstations
The following Windows machines are currently in the 3D

where name is the machine name.
Most of
the PC modeling workstations are identical, in terms of their configuration, their
hardware, their operating system(Windows2000) and the applications they are equipped with.
One exception is the scanning station
which includes additional scanning and 2D image processing software. This
workstation is to be used primarily for scanning and for 2D image processing.
There is also a GIS workstation called uranus, which is reserved for GIS users only,
and is not intended for 3D model building.
Configuration Of The Workstations
The System
- Intel Pentium4 3GHz CPU
- 2 Gb DDR RAM
- Graphics Card - ATI Fire GL X2T-256MB RAM
- CD-RW/DVD combo
The System Drive:
Reserved
The "C:" drive is
designated as the system drive. Do not save any files to the
"C:" drive. There are applications that prompt
you to save to "C:" every time you save a file. Save to the "V:" drive instead.
Change the default location of the prompt if you are able to. Any user
files saved onto the "C:" drive will be deleted by Lab staff.
Local Disk Space: Short-Term Temporary Disk
Space
If you want to save files
locally or if your application requires the improved performance of a local disk
you can use the "E:" drive. To use the "E:" drive: Create a folder
in
"E:\Users" with your login id as the folder name. Files on the "E:\" drive will be
deleted periodically so be sure to move them over to or back them up on the "V:" drive
as soon as you can work without the local disk space.
There is an also a fast SCSI
"F:" drive on each workstation, which provides additional user space in
conjunction with very high speed access. Create a folder on "F:\Users"
with your login id as the folder name. Files on the "F:" drive will be
deleted periodically so be sure to move them over to or back them up on the "V:" drive
as soon as you can work without the local disk space.
Long-Term Disk Space:
Workspace And Home Directory
All registered users for the Lab are issued
space on a remote filesystem named NFS4 which is mapped to the "V:" drive and accessed through a
gigabit network connection. This is where users would normally save and
access all of their work, and where their home directory resides. This
work space is made available to clients for
months or years. In addition to the standard user space there are
file system allocations that are given out to those who need larger amounts of disk space. If you
require a lot of disk space for a project, you can send a
request to portal ats.ucla.edu and arrangements will be made to assign you additional
space.
Printing
There are
two color printers normally available to Lab users:
-
Xerox Phaser 6250N
PS - This is a 4 color, phaser printer. It is the color printer in the
Lab and
is intended for most printing jobs. It will print up to 8.5x11, on a
variety of paper types and weights.
-
HP Color Laserjet 4550 (5308
MSA) - This is a 4 color laserjet printer. It is located in Math
Sciences 5308 and is
intended for special jobs only. Access to 5308 is required to use this printer.
It will print up to
8.5x11, on paper types provided by staff.
Scanning
There are
two scanners attached to the scanning workstation:
-
Epson Expression 1600 flatbed scanner – Optical resolution of 1600x3200 ppi.
-
Nikon Supers
Coolscan 4000 slide/film scanner – Optical resolution of 4000 ppi.
Shuttle Systems
There is a portable computer "shuttle" system
provided to Lab users that can be used for interactive, real time,
presentations in venues other than the Portal. A projector will also be
provided upon request. All requests for this small form factor computer and
projector should go to events@ats.ucla.edu.
Reporting Problems
Should you run into any problems using hardware, run short
of hardware related supplies or have any trouble
accessing the Lab be sure to report it immediately to Lab staff, either in
person or by e-mailing portal ats.ucla.edu.
Be as specific as you can in reporting the problem. We will respond as
soon as is possible.
